A Novel of Ancient Rome
By: Taylor Caldwell
Narrated by: Simon Mattacks, Cassandra Campbell
Length: 33 hrs and 9 mins
This was a fascinating listen. I spent many hours cycling around Vadnais Lake accompanied by Caldwell’s beautiful attempt to recount and reimagine the life of a man born in extraordinary times. Already familiar with much of the history, I found it deeply enjoyable to see how she orchestrated the narrative.
I thought it an excellent portrayal both in the details and in the grand sweep. A work like this requires artistic choice, and while I might hold some different opinions as a critic of that art, those differences do not diminish the effectiveness of the story or its power to bring the past to life.
Overall, it was an excellent read and a rewarding journey through history.
