Circe

By: Madeline Miller
Narrated by: Perdita Weeks
Length: 12 hrs and 8 mins

This was another intentional voyage beyond my usual waters. The book’s strong reputation and its Hellenistic, Titan touched setting caught my eye; while I had encountered Circe before in passing, I began the story without any deep or settled knowledge of her. The prose is elegant and carefully trimmed, and the narrative provides steady winds, enough to keep the ship moving even when the pace remains unhurried.

For me, this was less a fast passage and more a long coastal sail. The scenery is beautiful, the craft is sound, and the journey is thoughtful, but it never quite pressed me to full sail. I am glad I left my familiar harbor and made the crossing; still, once docked, I did not feel a strong urge to set out again.
