Barchester Towers expanded wonderfully on everything introduced in The Warden. By this point I understood the setting and church dynamics better, which allowed me to focus more fully on the people themselves.

This was far more engaging. Trollope did an excellent job portraying personalities, ambitions, misunderstandings, and the subtle ways people maneuver around one another. The prose and imagery remained beautiful, but the characters and their relationships gave the book considerably more life.

I enjoyed this much more than The Warden. It took the quiet world of the first book and filled it with movement, personality, and wonderfully human conflict.
